Make life affordable
Many residents now spend more than half their income on housing. The relentless rise in property tax, rent, and the cost of living is squeezing the middle class out of the ward. Relief has to be concrete — not another promise.
Property-tax relief where it's needed most
Introduce real property-tax discounts for young, first-time buyers and for seniors who have owned in Toronto for decades — relief of up to 25% for seniors who have contributed to Toronto's tax base for 25 years. These are the neighbours most at risk of being priced out, and the ones a fair tax system should protect first.
Bring down utility costs
Freeze runaway tax hikes and work to lower utility costs. Explore practical, city-led ideas — from city-owned affordable home insurance to city food stores — that fund support for people in need without penalizing the people who create jobs and wealth.
Keep the middle class in the ward
When families spend over 50% of income on housing, the middle class is sinking and the city is on a path to becoming unaffordable for everyone but the very rich and the subsidized. Property tax alone already costs a middle-class family a few months of income. Protecting the middle is how Parkdale–High Park stays a real, livable community.
